Be Expectant

My husband was watering the garden with me last week, and was in a hurry to be done with the chore. After producing great puddles around the thriving vegetables, he turned to the burned-up tomato plants and said, “We aren’t still watering these, are we?” I’m actually surprised he even asked, of course we are! They are fried beyond recognition, but the garden is still going, so there is a chance that they could produce! I feel very sure he rolled his eyes at my optimism, but he watered the pathetic roots, and I went behind him and re-watered them for good measure and some happy thoughts.

Fast forward to this morning and there it was: one perfect bloom. Can you see it in the picture? It’s there, beautiful and bright yellow in defiance to all the death around it. I would love to have some more tomatoes this season, and I can’t wait to take my guy out to the garden to see that I was right, but all that is secondary to the reminder I received today in the garden: there is new life everyday if we are willing to cultivate it and to look for it.

Great is Thy faithfulness, morning by morning, new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand hath provided, great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.
