We have lived in a new part of the country for a year now and are just starting a small group through our church. We are very excited because we know the power of doing life together. Even our teenagers are ready because it gives them the feeling of extended family; having people in our home on a regular basis, eating dinner together and playing with other peoples’ kids.
For us, small group is the place where you can share your mistakes, doubts and questions without fear of judgment. Conversely, it is the place where you can share your joys, successes and celebrations without worrying about jealousy or resentment. This is also a rich environment for learning how to navigate this crazy world from others who are similar. Think honestly for a minute about how few interactions we have that can be described in this way.
We were made to live in community, but are living more fragmented lives than ever in history. It is my sincere hope that any person reading this would try to be a part of a group; it doesn’t have to be church affiliated, it could be based on an interest or hobby. But find people who are passionate about the same thing you are and invest in them. You just might find that you are also investing in yourself.
1 Peter 3:8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.
