CanyonThree years ago my guy and I went on an adventure, hiking the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim in one day. It consisted of flying into Vegas, driving to the North side of the Grand Canyon, hiking 25 miles through the canyon to the South side and then driving to Scottsdale, AZ to fly home. I’ve mentioned it before here https://howsyourlovelife.wordpress.com/2012/07/24/hiking-lesson/ because it was such an incredible experience. We walked away with more than one lesson learned, as well as many lasting memories.

Last year my guy hiked the canyon again, this time with a different group of friends. Because of the odd detail of starting in one state and finishing in another we needed someone to drive our vehicles from the North Rim to the South Rim. The wives of our friends and I agreed to do the driving this time. We reached our destination a couple of hours before we expected to see our guys emerge from the canyon, so we headed down the switchbacks to meet them and hike the last 2-3 miles. For me it was like a completely different place; the last time I had been there, it was evening as we were on the last leg and so dark that you could only see right in front of you. Although we had witnessed so much beauty throughout the day, we had missed some gorgeous landscape those last several hours.

We met up with the guys and we couldn’t stop talking about what we were seeing. We were reminded that although we didn’t see the mountains and cliffs two years prior, they were still there. Old, rugged, majestic and lasting. There are times in life that feel like we are so alone, and want to cry out to God, “Where are you?” and the true answer is that He is always here…omnipresent…even when we don’t see Him or sense His presence. Old, rugged, majestic and lasting.

It felt both silly and humbling to be reminded of such a basic tenet of our beliefs in a concrete way, and I feel quite certain that one day in heaven we will each experience that same awe and wonder at the presence of the unseen.

I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Genesis 28:15

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior… Isaiah 43:2-3
